Dr. Tana Freeland Andre, center, a 2004 recipient of the Four Chaplains’ Scholarship, attended Alexander D. Goode Elementary School and later earned her medical degree from University of Dentistry and Medicine in New Jersey. Today, she’s a psychiatrist at an inpatient psychiatric hospital in a suburb of Philadelphia, where she continues to live by the values she saw in the Four Chaplains.

About the scholarship

Rabbi Alexander D. Goode worked to develop York’s interfaith community, and helped to lay the groundwork for York’s first racially integrated Boy Scout troop.

The Alexander D. Goode Elementary School in the York City School District is a living memorial to him and to his ideals.

The Four Chaplains’ Scholarship was established in 2001 from the proceeds of the Four Chaplains’ Prayer Breakfast.

Ten years later – through the efforts of David Meckley – five York residents developed an Endowment Fund at the York County Community Foundation to create a perpetual scholarship fund to be awarded each year to a student who attended Alexander D. Goode Elementary School and graduated from William Penn Senior High School.
